By Fire Chief Adam Grossman
February 16, 2015

On Monday February 16, 2015 at 1833 hours the Modena Fire Company was alerted to a reported dwelling fire at 57 South Brandywine Ave in Modena Borough. Dispatched along with Modena was the Westwood Fire Company, West Bradford Fire Company Tanker, Coatesville Truck Company and Sadsburyville for an Engine.

Modena Chief Dowlin was first on scene reporting electrical primary wires arcing to the rear of 33 South Brandywine Avenue with a fire on the roof of a two story end of row, Chief Dowlin established South Brandywine Command.

Engine 37-2 took the rear of the structure while Engine 37-1 took the front of structure pulling pass for Ladder 41. Crews threw ground ladders and went interior on units 33 and 35 to the second floor to find the fire. Coatesville and Westwood firefighters went to the roof and started opening up. However fire suppression for the first 30 minutes was hampered due to the live power line actively arcing at the roof line to the rear of the structure.

South Brandywine command requested East Brandywine Station 49 for (RIT), also with the common roof threat requested second alarm, adding Cochranville and Thorndale Fire Companies.

Good aggressive interior and roof operation held the fire to the first two units involved. Red Cross was called for residents of all 16 units as power would not be restored at least for the night.

Peco worked through the night to restore power to the remaining 14 unit not involved in the fire.

All units cleared the scene shortly after 1900 hours, residents were taken to the fire house and set up in hotels by Red Cross and finally transported there by Modena personnel shortly after midnight.

Units: Engine 31-1, Command 31

Mutual Aid: Modena FC, Westwood FC, Coatesville FD, East Brandywine FC, Thorndale FC, Cochranville FC, West Bradford FC
