By Fire Chief Adam Grossman
August 2, 2016

On Tuesday August 2nd, 2016 at 1827 the Sadsburyville Fire Company, Westwood Fire Company, Keystone Valley EMS and Medic 93 were dispatched to the 800 block of Old Wilmington Road in Sadsbury Township for an auto accident with entrapment. Calls to 911 indicated a car had overturned and there was still one subject trapped inside.

Fire Chief Grossman arrived at 1829 and confirmed the report and established Old Wilmington Road Command. Engine 31-1 with a crew of 6 arrived at 1832 and immediately went in service with hazard control and gaining entry to the patient. Westwood Ambulance 44-1 arrived at 1832 and began patient care.

Sadsburyville Firefighters utilized Junkyard Dog Rescue Struts to stabilize the car on its roof so that it wouldn't collapse further on the crew or patient. Firefighters then utilized hydraulic rescue tools to gain access to the patient. There was one subject trapped inside the vehicle and was secured in by their seat belt. Once a door was removed firefighters were able to package the patient and remove the patient from their vehicle. The extrication was complete just 6 minutes after arriving on location.

Westwood Rescue 44 continued in and assisted with clean up. Westwood Fire Police had Old Wilmington Road shutdown between First Avenue and Lincoln Highway for the duration of the incident. Westwood Ambulance 44-1 transported one patient by ground to a local trauma center for further evaluation.

Units: Engine 31-1, Engine 31-2, Squad 31, Chief 31, 18 Volunteers

The man in this car was very fortunate to say the least as well as anyone else that was in his path! This happened right in front of our home. We and the neighbors have been complaining about the speed in which people travel, North & South Old Wilmington Rd. You might think it's a speedway for goodness sakes! It is also scary if someone has been drinking at the local bar (which I have been told in both incidents within the past few weeks have been alcohol related) I am not saying they were drinking at Harry's but they were evidently consuming alcohol somewhere and should not have been driving. So many people try and beat the light on Rt. 30 going all four directions. I see it everyday and by the time they get 3-4 houses going South on Old Wilmington, they are going at least 45-50 miles an hour! We, along with this driver are lucky he did not hit our home! As we have asked many, many times in the past, PLEASE, PLEASE just sit in our driveway so drivers can see that at the very least, the Police are watching! We are not asking you to ticket people although that would help, we are asking that you just sit in someone's driveway in this area so drivers can see that you are watching! This is the second among many accidents on this road but the second within three weeks! PLEASE WATCH OUR ROAD AND HELP US, our children and pets, STAY SAFE! The township puts up a sign asking to watch out for motorcycles...what about the residents with regards to speeding down our road with vehicles and motorcycles? Way too many motorcycles speed down our road and some are so loud and going so fast it shakes you! PLEASE HELP US STAY SAFE ON SOUTH OLD WILMINGINGTON RD AS WELL AS LETTING THOSE DRIVERS KNOW, YOU ARE WATCHING!
